If you play a round of golf at Laurel Ridge Country Club and think you’ve seen everything, make a tee time for the next day.
You’ve undoubtedly been concentrating a little too hard on club selection, pin placement or your golf shoes. Laurel Ridge NC Mountain Golf Course is a masterful showcase for the abilities of renowned golf course architect, Bob Cupp.
Unlike some mountain courses, which by necessity are located at the end of a long, twisting trail far from a main highway, Laurel Ridge is easily accessible. And once golfers have enjoyed a taste of this paradise in the mountains, many quickly decide that it may be a great place to visit, but they’d rather live here.
The golf course built in 1986 offers every challenge expected of a mountain course, yet does so with a delicate balance of fairness and playability. Laurel Ridge plays 6,904 yards from the back tees with a course rating of 72.4 and slope rating of 146.
The scenery is gardenesque; the golf sensational. The hills, inclines and rolling meadows tested Cupp’s design ability and the construction engineering genius of course builder Jim Holmes. But the end result is both obvious and demanding, even for the scratch golfer.
“A superior course needs a variety of lengths of holes, left or right turns, uphills and downhills, putting surface sizes, green settings and so on,” says Cupp. “But every shot must be visible. If the player sees the shot, the player remembers the shot. My goal is for the players to remember their game.”
In addition to our 18 hole championship golf course, our practice facilities include a driving range and a putting/chipping green. We offer golf bag storage for our members as well as a bag drop station and Turn Window snack bar for quick and delicious meals, snacks and beverages.
Another feature of our course is year-round golfing, weather permitting, since the temperature at Laurel Ridge averages 70 degrees in the summer and 40 in the winter. The course is a kaleidoscope of color for much of the year with a wide variety of flowering plants. The always green fairways are a combination of 90% bent grass and 10% blue grass. The undulating greens, a Cupp trademark, are a mix of bent grasses, as are the tees.
The contour of the land, flowing streams, reflective ponds, sand and grass bunkers are all masterfully designed to give each hole its own unique character. The golf course at Laurel Ridge Country Club offers the player an outstanding golf experience within a sophisticated and secluded mountain hideaway. Come join us!
ABOUT BOB CUPP, COURSE ARCHITECT
After serving as senior designer for Jack Nicklaus for more than 15 years, Bob Cupp formed his own firm, Bob Cupp, Inc., in 1984. Nicklaus credits Bob as being one of the cornerstones of his present global design firm and the two men remain friends to this day.
Since that time, his courses have hosted over 50 national and international tournaments, including seven major championships. In 1992, Golf World Magazine (the weekly magazine of Golf Digest) named Bob the first ever Golf Architect of the Year, an unprecedented award that has gone on to name Nicklaus, Pete Dye, Rees Jones, Tom Fazio and others. Golf Digest and Golf Magazine have selected Cupp’s work as the best in the nation no less than four times and runner-up six times. He has numerous courses on various Top 100 course lists.
A member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, Cupp has risen to Executive Committee and served as President for 2012-2013. The importance of the Society in the world of golf has grown significantly in the last decade. The opportunity to make meaningful contributions to the game is not only important, but challenging and has become an important part of his life. In 2014, he was inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame.
